The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA), an affiliate of The Council of State Governments (CSG), is an international association composed of members from the United States, Canada and other countries actively involved in community corrections which includes pretrial, probation, and parole in both criminal and juvenile justice arenas. All levels of government including federal, state/provincial, local and tribal agencies are counted among its constituents. By taking the initiative, APPA has grown to become the voice for thousands of pretrial, probation and parole practitioners and providers of services including at all levels from both the public and private sectors. The Web Designer Assistant assists with creating and maintaining all APPA's websites and other digital efforts. Will assist in the discovery, planning, and development phases of web-based products. Responsible for posting content to HTML and CMS-based websites, general creation of web-ready graphic/audio/video elements.


  • Maintains APPA's family of websites by participating in the overall structuring of websites and creating enhancements and modifications.,
  • Designs and executes comprehensive graphic layouts for new sections and/or features on websites, including coordination of templates and assets.
  • Insures consistent branding within websites and with any original print materials.
  • Advises & assists with the creation of new content management components for consistent and efficient performance of dynamic content delivery.
  • Maintains customized and dynamically interactive websites; helps explore, integrate, and showcase new technologies as they emerge.
  • Assesses and implements new standards, technologies, and trends, and proposes strategies for improving usability of websites.
  • Remains current on the latest methods and technological developments and recommends technologies and approaches appropriate to the target audience.
  • Assists management with developing and maintaining policies and procedures regarding APPA's web concerns to meet the organizations short-term and long-term needs and goals.
  • Provide staff support at APPA institutes and events.


  • Proficiency with HTML5, CSS3, Bootstrap Framework,
  • Familiarity with JavaScript/JQuery, .NET, ADA/Section 508, and APIs are a plus.
  • Efficiency with applications such as Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, illustrator, etc.
  • Basic understanding of UX and interactive design theory
  • Confidence applying skill and understanding of design, color, and typography
  • Working knowledge of responsive-based, cross-device approach to web design
  • Intermediate understanding of W3C standards, usability, and SEO best practices.
  • Efficient, organized work style and an ability to prioritize quickly and confidently;
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a good design sensibility;
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to demonstrate sensitivity and tact;
  • Extreme attention to detail;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including maturity, an ability to work independently and in a team setting;
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects in an efficient and accurate manner, according to both scheduled and unscheduled deadlines;
  • Ability to learn applications and utilize new tools.


  • Associates Degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of one year of web design work experience.
