The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center is a national nonprofit organization that provides practical, nonpartisan, research-driven strategies and tools to increase public safety and strengthen communities. In general, the CSG Justice Center works closely with government executives, legislative leaders, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, victim advocates, and others to develop consensus on various criminal justice issues and to translate this consensus into comprehensive reports, policy briefs, state and federal legislation, model policies, and innovative programs. The CSG Justice Center develops written and web-based materials, conducts complex data analysis, and provides on-the-ground technical assistance to policymakers and practitioners from multiple systems (corrections, behavioral health, law enforcement, etc.) in states and local jurisdictions.

Job Title: Data Visualization Intern, Justice Reinvestment

Type of Position: Part-time, Temporary (16 week duration)

Job Summary

The data visualization intern will work with a collaborative team of policy analysts, researchers, and communications professionals to produce a national publication on criminal justice issues. This work will involve gaining an understanding of criminal justice trends across a variety of measures, creating design concepts that are compatible with back-end data systems, and generating interactive images to display data that can be readily understood by a non-technical audience. This position will involve synthesizing feedback from a variety of stakeholders and adjusting concepts and drafts accordingly.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities of the data visualization intern include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work with the CSG Justice Center's Research Division to identify data appropriate for visualization;
  • Design visualization modules that adhere to the CSG Justice Center's style guide;
  • Create interactivity features and illustrate the user experience for evualation; and
  • Work with the CSG Justice Center's web team to create prototypes of visualizations.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to design for both print and online media;
  • Ability to synthesize feedback and create a responsive product;
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively distill and present complex information in a concise way;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including maturity and an ability to work independently and in a team setting;
  • Efficient, organized work style and an ability to prioritize quickly and confidently and manage multiple deadlines;

Experience Requirements

Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate-level program in a related field. Applicants must have experience visualizing complex data, preferably through use of software such as Tableau. Experience with WordPress, Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel, and Adobe Suite is required.

Physical Requirements Essential to Perform the Duties of the Job

  • Frequently communicates with internal and external coworkers and customers;
  • Frequently views the computer to create policy briefs, memos and presentations;
  • Frequently remains in a sitting position to perform desk duties;
  • Frequently uses the computer with fingers and hands;
  • Frequently works in a well lit, tempered room;
  • Occasionally walks throughout office to communicate to coworkers; and
  • Seldom lifts objects, such as files or paper boxes, with weight up to 25 pounds.
