The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center is a national nonprofit organization that provides practical, nonpartisan, research-driven strategies and tools to increase public safety and strengthen communities. In general, the CSG Justice Center works closely with government executives, legislative leaders, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, victim advocates, and others to develop consensus on various criminal justice issues and to translate this consensus into comprehensive reports, policy briefs, state and federal legislation, model policies, and innovative programs. The CSG Justice Center develops written and web-based materials, conducts complex data analysis, and provides on-the-ground technical assistance to policymakers and practitioners from multiple systems (corrections, behavioral health, law enforcement, etc.) in states and local jurisdictions.

Job Title: Policy Intern, Justice Reinvestment

Type of Position: Part-time, Temporary (16 week duration)

Job Summary

The policy intern will work with a collaborative team of policy analysts, researchers, and communication professionals to produce a national publication on criminal justice issues. This work will involve research into criminal justice trends in various states across the country, generating initial drafts of content for the publication, documenting personal stories and developing case studies to illustrate the impact of certain policies or trends, and participating in conversations with internal and external stakeholders to collect feedback on prototypes and drafts. This position offers a significant level of responsibility and opportunity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities of the policy intern include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct qualitative research to inform publication content;
  • Draft content based on approved publication outlines;
  • Condense research papers and/or literature reviews into concise issue briefs;
  • Assist in circulating drafts of content and collecting and consolidating edits;
  • Identify opportunities to visualize publication content through data and descriptive graphics;
  • Compile survey results for inclusion in publication; and
  • Conduct and transcribe interviews for case studies.

  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills and an analytical mind;
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively distill and present complex information in a concise way;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including maturity, an ability to work independently and in a team setting,
  • Efficient, organized work style and an ability to prioritize quickly and confidently and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to pivot direction or approach with speed and accuracy.
  • Excellent reading comprehension and ability to retain large quantities of complex information.

Experience Requirements

Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate-level program for criminal justice, political science, journalism, or communications. Prior experience working in criminal justice or policy development is a plus, as is experience in content generation and managing production schedules.

Physical Requirements Essential to Perform the Duties of the Job

  • Frequently communicates with internal and external coworkers and customers;
  • Frequently views the computer to create policy briefs, memos and presentations;
  • Frequently remains in a sitting position to perform desk duties;
  • Frequently uses the computer with fingers and hands;
  • Frequently works in a well lit, tempered room;
  • Occasionally walks throughout office to communicate to coworkers; and
  • Seldom lifts objects, such as files or paper boxes, with weight up to 25 pounds.
