The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center is a national nonprofit organization that provides practical, nonpartisan, research-based strategies and tools to increase public safety and strengthen communities. The CSG Justice Center works closely with government executives, legislative leaders, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, victim advocates, and others to develop consensus on criminal justice issues and to translate this consensus into comprehensive reports, policy briefs, state and federal legislation, model policies, and innovative programs. The CSG Justice Center produces original research, develops print and web-based materials, and provides on-the-ground technical assistance to policymakers and practitioners from multiple systems (corrections, behavioral health, housing, etc.) in state and local jurisdictions.

Job Title:  Director of Media Relations, Communications

Reports to:  Director, Communications Division

Location:  New York 

Job Summary

The director of media relations works with the Communications Division to provide strategic leadership in media relations and brand development to advance comprehensive, ongoing, organization-wide communications initiatives. The director of media relations supervises a small team and reports to the Communications Division director. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and execute traditional and social media-based communications plans to support the CSG Justice Center's overall strategic objectives, as well as specific events, publications, projects, and initiatives;

  • Lead strategic coordination of public relations efforts across the organization;
  • Lead brand enhancement and management activities;
  • Serve as contact and spokesperson for media requests.
  • Develop relationships with reporters and proactively generate media coverage of the CSG Justice Center's work;
  • Develop project-specific communications tools (media advisories, press releases, talking points, fact sheets, etc.);
  • Develop strategic internal and external responses to public relations crises;
  • Provide media training for members of Justice Center staff who are approved to speak with media;
  • Collaborate with the division director and senior staff to develop long-range strategies to guide the Justice Center's overall communications initiatives;
  • Ensure that senior staff and CSG Justice Center colleagues, consultants, or funders are aware of relevant project developments and that other work in the field is leveraged for the advancement of CSG Justice Center goals. 

Skills and Abilities

Excellent research, writing, and editing skills and an analytical mind;

  • Strong oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively distill and present complex information in a clear, concise way;
  • Demonstrated experience with managing media inquiries, and developing and executing a strategic communications plan;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including maturity, an ability to work independently and in a team setting, and a sense of humor;
  • Efficient, organized work style and an ability to prioritize quickly and confidently and manage multiple deadlines;
  • Willingness to travel on occasion.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, political science or related field.
  • Minimum eight years' work experience in the fields of communications, public relations, or public affairs.
  • Minimum three years in a supervisory role.
  • Exposure to criminal justice issues and/or policy analysis preferred.
  • Experience in politics or political campaigns preferred.

Physical Requirements Essential to Perform the Duties of the Job

  • Frequently communicates with internal and external coworkers and customers;
  • Frequently views the computer to create press materials, memos, and presentations;
  • Frequently remains in a sitting position to perform desk duties;
  • Frequently uses the computer with fingers and hands;
  • Frequently works in a well-lit, tempered room;
  • Occasionally walks throughout office to communicate with coworkers;
  • Seldom lifts objects, such as files or paper boxes, with weight up to 25 pounds.
