THE COUNCIL OF STATE GOVERNMENTS

JUSTICE CENTER

 

The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center is a national nonprofit organization that provides practical, nonpartisan, research-based strategies and tools to increase public safety and strengthen communities. The CSG Justice Center works closely with government executives, legislative leaders, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, victim advocates, and others to develop consensus on criminal justice issues and to translate this consensus into comprehensive reports, policy briefs, state and federal legislation, model policies, and innovative programs. The CSG Justice Center produces original research, develops print and web-based materials, and provides on-the-ground technical assistance to policymakers and practitioners from multiple systems (corrections, behavioral health, housing, etc.) in state and local jurisdictions.

JOB SUMMARY

 

The editorial director works with the Communications Division to provide strategic editorial oversight and guidance in the development and production of the CSG Justice Center's content and publications, manages the organization's complex editorial production schedule, and helps advance comprehensive, ongoing, organization-wide communications initiatives, The editorial director supervises a team of editors and reports to the Director of Communications.

 
 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES            

 

      Oversee the conceptual development, writing, editing, production, and dissemination of the CSG Justice Center's content and publications;

      Oversee the CSG Justice Center's production schedule, coordinating with policy divisions to create the products associated with their annual work plans;

      Oversee the team of editors who provide editorial services to the entire organization;

      Oversee the work of contractors including designers, editors, writers, and illustrators who may be engaged to participate in the creation of CSG Justice Center products;

      Ensure that the CSG Justice Center's content and publications meet the highest editorial and production standards and are created within established timeframes;

      Ensure that all public-facing materials have a standard and a consistent voice;

      Ensure the quality of the content of the CSG Justice Center's newsletters, board meeting and fundraising materials, marketing materials, social media campaigns, event materials, and press materials;

      Collaborate with the Communications Division director and senior staff to develop long-range editorial strategies to support the organization's goals and objectives; and

      Contribute to the ongoing improvement of the content and functionality of CSG Justice Center's website;

      Represent the Communications Division at internal meetings, including board meetings, executive leadership meetings, strategic planning meetings, Justice Center-hosted conferences and convenings, and policy division meetings, as necessary; and

      Represent the organization at external meetings, conferences, trainings, and events, as necessary.

 

SKILLS & ABILITIES

 

      Excellent conceptual development, line-editing, writing, and research skills;

      Strong oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively distill and present complex information in a clear, concise way;

      Excellent critical thinking and leadership skills;

      Ability to coordinate and communicate across all staff to maintain efficiency;

      Excellent interpersonal skills, including maturity, an ability to work independently and in a team setting, and a sense of humor;

      Efficient, organized work style and an ability to prioritize quickly and confidently; and

      Demonstrated ability to perform in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.

 

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of eight years of work experience in the fields of communications, publishing, or journalism is required, with a minimum of three years in a supervisorial role. Experience managing an editorial production schedule is also required. Exposure to criminal justice issues and/or policy analysis and politics preferred.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

A Bachelor's degree is required.
