The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA), an affiliate of The Council of State Governments (CSG), is an international association composed of members from the United States, Canada and other countries actively involved in community corrections which includes pretrial, probation, and parole in both criminal and juvenile justice arenas. All levels of government including federal, state/provincial, local and tribal agencies are counted among its constituents. By taking the initiative, APPA has grown to become the voice for thousands of pretrial, probation and parole practitioners and providers of services including at all levels from both the public and private sectors. Educators, volunteers, victim service providers, concerned citizens and others with an interest in criminal and juvenile justice are also among APPA members. This is a remote position based in Lexington, KY (other geographically areas may be considered).


The Web and Graphic Designer will create and maintain all APPA's websites, digital and print collateral, social media communication and other design efforts. This position will assist in the discovery, planning, and development phases of web-based products and maintain these products through posting content to HTML and CMS-based websites and general creation of web-ready graphic/audio/video elements.


  • Develops and implements design strategies to enhance and harmonize APPA's brand.
  • Creates presentation materials to support training, webinars, and executive presentations.
  • Designs print collateral (brochures, flyers, posters) in support of marketing campaigns.
  • Designs digital collateral (email, social media, ads) in support of marketing campaigns.
  • Designs graphics and front-end interfaces for responsive-based websites and social media channels.
  • Maintains APPA's family of websites with updates to content, style, and structure.
  • Organizes and grows the design resource library (photos, design elements, fonts, etc.).
  • Designs APPA merchandise and maintains APPA's online merchandise store.
  • Provides staff support at APPA training institutes and events.

  • Confidence applying skill and understanding of design, color, and typography
  • Expertise with Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)
  • Knowledge of printing and electronic production methods.
  • Proficiency with HTML5, CSS3, Bootstrap Framework.
  • Basic understanding of UX and interactive design theory.
  • Working knowledge of responsive-based, cross-device approach to web design.
  • Efficient, organized work style and an ability to prioritize quickly and confidently.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a good design sensibility.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to demonstrate sensitivity and tact.
  • Extreme attention to instructions and detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects assignments under scheduled and unscheduled deadlines.
  • Ability to learn applications and utilize new tools.
  • Moderate motion graphics and video editing skills preferred.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript/JQuery, .NET, APIs preferred.
  • Understanding of SEM and SEO best practices preferred.
  • Understanding of W3C Standards, ADA, Section 508, and accessibility concerns preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams preferred.
  • Experience with Canva preferred.
  • Experience with Constant Contact preferred.


  • Associates Degree in a related field (additional relevant experience may be substituted for education requirement).
  • Minimum three years of design work experience in range of media
  • Portfolio of print and digital design work


CSG believes that pay equity and pay transparency advance workplace fairness. Compensation will be equitable and based on experience. The salary range for this position, based in Lexington, KY is $50,000 to $60,000. This salary range is subject to change based on work location and market conditions.
