How you'll fit in:

The data scientist manager - embedded analyst program will work with Departments of Corrections (DOCs) for an embedded analyst program to generate, analyze, and report data to inform operations, decision-making, and policy development to enhance data analysis capacity. The position will entail intensive mentoring to embedded data analysts, as well as being embedded in DOCs for short-term analysis projects. . The position will entail collecting and cleaning data, manipulating data, creating and tailoring visualization of interrelated datasets, and presenting research findings. The position also requires mentorship and leadership skills. This position could require up to 20% travel.

What you'll do:

Specific responsibilities of the Data Scientist Manager include the following:

  • Pull, manipulate, and structure criminal justice data utilizing tables within different data sources with different products.
  • Coordinate research and analytic activities utilizing various data points (unstructured and structured) and employ programming to clean, massage, and organize the data.
  • Focus on translating data into actionable dashboards using cutting-edge visualization tools and technology and present to various audiences.
  • Provide data visualizations (reports and dashboards) to support stakeholder requirements.
  • Analyze existing reports to improve performance and develop new reports using the best data visualization practices and processes.
  • Work with multiple complex data sources.
  • Work with a wide range of stakeholders and functional teams along with policy analysts to develop data visualizations that provide insights for government.
  • Work with DOCs as an embedded data analyst for short-term, targeted analysis projects.
  • Implement processes that improve and lead to greater data quality.
  • Develop sustainable technology solutions for DOCs.
  • Manage and work across multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Work independently to meet project deadlines.
  • Supervise junior data scientists.
  • Mentor embedded data analysts in DOCs.
  • Manage and develop timelines that align with quality assurance policies.
  • Propose and utilize novel approaches to programming in data management and analysis reporting.
  • Lead cross-division work and tool development.
  • Manage relationships with contractors and partner organizations.
  • Oversee and ensure research projects follow research plans.
  • Manage and coordinate multiple complex initiatives.

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in the field of data science, data visualization, computer sciences, business analytics, statistics, mathematics, or related field.
  • Ten or more years of experience using data for social impact, including working with nonprofit, government, or similar entities
  • Experience web scraping and/or working in API environments
  • Coding knowledge and experience with several languages such as SAS, Stata, SPSS, SQL, LaTeX, HTML, CSS, C, Python, and JavaScript
  • Demonstrated experience applying data science methods to real-world data problems
  • Experience utilizing visualization tools to take advantage of the growing volume of available information
  • Demonstrated experience with quality assurance techniques and reproducible research processes
  • Efficient, organized work style
  • Experience with primary data collection and/or sampling methodology
  • Hands-on experience with quality assurance tools (GitHub, GitLab)
  • Hands-on experience with interactive data visualization tools (examples: R Shiny, D3, Tableau, Microsoft Power BI)
  • Hands-on experience with reproducible research tools (R Markdown, Jupyter)
  • Experience working with sensitive data and data security protocols
  • Experience independently directing project tasks
  • Experience in budget management
  • Experience supervising/mentoring data scientists/programmers/students/interns
  • Proficiency with the following tools:
    • R
    • Git
  • Knowledge of criminal justice systems and settings, public policy, or government
  • Knowledge of scientific research methods, principles, and techniques
  • Knowledge of statistical concepts, methods, and application to data analysis
  • Knowledge of data security procedures including data use agreements and data transfer methods
  • Expertise in relational database design and concepts
  • Ability to automate processes
  • Ability to work independently to determine the most suitable technological tools to accomplish project objectives
  • Superior research, writing, and editing skills demonstrated by authorship or joint authorship of research reports
  • Strong oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively present information in a concise way;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including maturity, keen judgment, and self-confidence, with a sense of humor and ability to maintain balance and perspective
  • Ability to work with and find consensus among people from a wide array of backgrounds and perspectives, as well as an appreciation for the need to address issues in nonpartisan and non-polarizing ways
  • Strong leadership and management skills

CSG believes that pay equity and pay transparency advance workplace fairness. Compensation will be equitable and based on experience. The salary range for this position, based in New York, is $100,815 - $143,850. This salary range is subject to change based on work location and market conditions.
