The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center is a national nonprofit organization that provides practical, nonpartisan, research-driven strategies and tools to increase public safety and strengthen communities. The CSG Justice Center works closely with government executives, legislative leaders, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, victim advocates, and others to develop consensus on criminal justice issues and to translate this consensus into comprehensive reports, policy briefs, state and federal legislation, model policies, and innovative programs. The CSG Justice Center produces original research, develops print and web-based materials, and provides on-the-ground technical assistance to policymakers and practitioners from multiple systems (corrections, behavioral health, housing, etc.) in state and local jurisdictions

 Job Title:  Director of Content Development, Communications

Reports to:  Director, Communications Division

Job Summary

 

The Director of Content Development works with the Communications Division Director and across the organization divisions to provide strategic guidance and oversight in the conceptualization and production of the CSG Justice Center's content, including publications, media relations materials, and web content. These responsibilities include developing and monitoring departmental work plans and budgets, leading communications coordination on high-priority projects, and providing direct supervision as necessary for members of communications division. The Director of Content Development also ensures that all CSG Justice Center content is high quality, aligns with organizational goals, and is accessible for key audiences.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy and Planning

  • Oversee the communication division's work plans/production calendar and enhance integration across editorial, online, and media relations work streams;
  • Liaise with other divisions of the CSG Justice Center to identify connections across initiatives and assist with the conceptual development and framing of associated products to ensure they align with and advance organizational goals;
  • Provide focused consultation on the development and planning of communications-related deliverables for the Justice Center's high-profile projects;
  • Collaborate with the Communications Division director to develop short- and long-range strategies to guide the communications division, aligned with the organization's mission and objectives; and
  • Identify new opportunities to support organizational initiatives through the development of creative communications strategies and materials to promote and publicize these activities. 

Management and Operations

  • Ensure that all CSG Justice Center content meets quality standards and are created within established timeframes and budgets;
  • Ensure that all CSG Justice Center materials have a consistent voice and reflect organizational strategic priorities/vision;
  • Provide guidance and support to the team of editors in strategic planning with policy teams,

  • Assist in retaining and overseeing the work of external vendors and contractors including designers, editors, writers, and illustrators;
  • Establish and apply procedures for tracking the division budget and statements of work for individual projects
  • Represent the Communications Division at internal meetings, including board meetings, executive leadership meetings, strategic planning meetings, and policy division meetings, as necessary; and
  • Represent the organization at external meetings, conferences, and other events, as necessary.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.

 Education and Experience Requirements

A minimum of eight years of work experience in the fields of communications, project management, or strategic planning consulting is required, with a minimum of three years in a supervisorial role. Experience managing an editorial production schedule is also required. Exposure to criminal justice issues and/or policy analysis and politics strongly preferred.
